Black Panther: New Casting Choice Sparks Outrage Among Marvel Fans

Marvel considers a new actor for the role of Black Panther — and ends up angering the hero’s fans. Learn more.

In the MCU, Black Panther was introduced through the performance of actor Chadwick Boseman, who brought the Marvel superhero to life brilliantly.

Chadwick portrayed the hero in four different Marvel Studios films. However, plans changed drastically for the second solo movie in the franchise due to the actor’s passing.

In 2020, Chadwick died after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Soon after, Marvel chose to honor his legacy in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, released in 2022.

Now, six years after Chadwick’s death, Marvel and director Ryan Coogler are reportedly determined to move forward and cast a new actor.

Black Panther fans are furious over the new casting option!

Previously, two possibilities leaked for the future of Black Panther. The first is that we would see the hero’s son, who is also named T’Challa, grow up and eventually take on his father’s mantle. He was introduced in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022.

There is also a second option being discussed: Marvel could introduce a new variant of the hero and focus on that version going forward. The studio is exploring the multiverse more than ever, so anything is on the table.

Regardless of the direction the studio chooses, new actors are already being considered for the role. And the latest name revealed by journalist Daniel Richtman did not sit well with fans.

According to the report, actor Aaron Pierre had conversations with Marvel about the role. However, the idea was poorly received by fans. In addition to Pierre already being involved with DC, where he is set to star in an upcoming Green Lantern series, some fans also voiced opposition to a lighter-skinned Black actor taking on the role.

There is still hope

According to journalist Jeff Sneider, that meeting happened a long time ago, and there are currently no ongoing talks between Aaron Pierre and Marvel Studios.

It now appears that Black Panther has a new fan-favorite frontrunner: Damson Idris, as we previously reported here. This choice, in contrast, is supported by most fans of the hero.
