Famke Janssen Addresses Jean Grey’s Absence in Avengers: Doomsday

While many original X-Men cast members have been rumored or confirmed to return for Avengers: Doomsday, Famke Janssen has seemingly put any lingering hopes for her return as Jean Grey to rest.

The actor recently commented on the upcoming Marvel event, suggesting she is just as much in the dark as the rest of the public.

Janssen said she is “really excited to see when it comes out”, adding: “Just like everyone else, I’ll find out what those storylines are and how it all ended up.” This statement strongly implies that she was not invited to reprise her iconic role, leaving the door open for a new iteration of the powerful mutant in the Multiverse Saga.

Why Her Absence is Not a Surprise

Janssen’s portrayal of Jean Grey was central to the originalX-Men series, but her non-involvement in Avengers: Doomsday aligns with several production rumors.

The film is reportedly bringing back several key cast members from the 2000s X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Ian McKellen (Magneto). However, the specific version of Jean Grey featured in the upcoming film may be an entirely new actor or a variant from a different timeline.

Furthermore, the character of Jean Grey has a complex and powerful history, especially regarding the Phoenix Force. Introducing her specific, established continuity into the already crowded multiversal plot of Avengers: Doomsday may have proven too complicated for the writers.

By not including Janssen’s Jean, the studio frees up the creative team to use the character’s immense power in a different context, possibly in the subsequent film, Avengers: Secret Wars.

Do you think Marvel Studios should stick to new variants for iconic roles like Jean Grey, or should they try to bring back the original actors, even if it complicates the story?
