Why Did It Take So Long?

According to visual effects supervisor Alexandra Rebeck, it all came down to one word: mirrors.

The bathroom set was filled with reflective surfaces, and during filming, you could see the camera crew reflected everywhere. To make it look like Steven was truly alone in that mirror-filled space, the VFX artists had to digitally erase the camera and crew from hundreds of reflections — frame by frame.

Rebeck explained:

“We actually had two different versions of the set. One had real mirrors, where we shot the original footage with Oscar and the camera operator. But because the mirrors were real, there were hundreds of reflections showing crew members. So we spent months erasing every single one.”
