Avengers: Doomsday – Major Release Date Rumor Debunked
During CinemaCon, Disney finally confirmed it has no plans to change the release date for Avengers: Doomsday.
The highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18. However, the film will face a huge, formidable competitor right out of the gate.
Yes, we’re talking about Dune: Part Three, which is also making its big debut on that exact same day.
And because of one very important detail involving movie screens, plenty of rumors suggested Marvel Studios would change the release date for its highly anticipated film.
Avengers 5 will take on Dune 3 at the box office!
During CinemaCon, Disney finally confirmed it has no plans to change the release date for Avengers: Doomsday.
In other words, the film that will mark the return of Robert Downey Jr. under the direction of the Russo Brothers will truly go head-to-head with Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy finale.
The main reason fans believed Marvel would move the film up was the battle over those coveted IMAX screens. After all, rumors indicated that Warner Bros. and Dune 3 would have guaranteed total exclusivity in those premium theaters.
That’s no small thing, since the IMAX format can account for up to 30% of the total box office for major Hollywood releases.
It’s worth remembering we’ve seen this exact same drama play out not long ago.
This has happened before
In 2023, Mission: Impossible 7 ended up losing all of its IMAX screens to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, sparking a lot of controversy and costing star Tom Cruise a massive amount.
So the speculation was that Marvel would move Avengers 5 up by at least a week, just to lock in a few days of exclusivity on the giant screens.
However, Disney executives refused to give any impression they were backing down.
The studio showed complete confidence that the MCU’s next epic event, uniting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against the classic threat of Victor Von Doom, will overshadow the competition without much difficulty.
Either way, pop culture fans are the real winners here, getting two massive releases at the same time.
