Chris Evans Finally Reveals Why He Will Return as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans took the stage at CinemaCon alongside Downey Jr. and finally revealed why he said yes to the MCU's most unexpected return.

For years, Chris Evans repeated the same line that he wouldn’t return to the MCU. But as every Marvel fan already knows, the actor changed his mind, and Avengers: Doomsday is the reason.

At CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Evans took the stage alongside Robert Downey Jr., the Russo Brothers, and Kevin Feige to present the highly anticipated film. And it was there that he finally explained Steve Rogers’ return.

“I said I would only come back if there was a real reason,” the actor stated. “And in Doomsday, there is a very real reason for these heroes to need Steve Rogers.”

Chris Evans justifies his return as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday!

The statement is simple, but it carries a lot of weight. After all, since Endgame, the actor had been signaling that Steve Rogers’ story had come to an end. He even returned to Marvel in 2024, but as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine – not as Captain America.

Now, the story is different. And CinemaCon made that very clear.

In addition to the statement, Evans also joked about his character’s relationship with the villain played by Downey Jr.:

“I don’t like him.” The audience, of course, went wild. But it’s worth noting that on stage, the tension between the two went beyond the joke, as Evans walked in without hugging his former castmate, in a bit that set the tone for the film.

And speaking of the film, the exclusive trailer shown at CinemaCon brought several new reveals. One of the biggest surprises was Steve Rogers’ new look. In previous teasers, the character appeared with short hair and clean-shaven, closer to his Endgame version.

In the full trailer, however, he appears with long hair and a full beard, the same look from the Infinity War era, when the hero was operating outside the Avengers’ structure. A small change, but one that says a lot.

Another standout moment from the preview is Thor gathering his old companions and saying “we need a miracle,” as Mjolnir flies to Steve Rogers. Yes, he’s still worthy.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
